Parent and Grandparent Sponsorship Reopening in January 2014
After being closed to new applicants for quite some time, the sponsorship program for parents and grandparents will reopen on January 2, 2014. The cap is fairly low, with only 5,000 applications to be accepted in 2014. This cap may be increased as Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) works through the massive backlog of old applications, many of which have been awaiting processing since the last decade.
CIC has announced some new criteria for sponsorship of parents and grandparents. Some of the major changes include a higher earning threshold for sponsors, and a 20 year (up from 10 year) undertaking period where the sponsor will be financially responsible for their relatives. Any dependants coming to Canada with the sponsored relative must be under 19 in all cases, unless it can be shown that the dependant has a mental or a physical disability. There are of course many other criteria to consider and it is important to review the requirements carefully before considering an application. Also it should be understood that this criteria applies to the sponsorship of parents and grandparents only; other criteria will apply to the sponsorship of other family members.
If you are a Canadian citizen or permanent resident and you would like to sponsor your parents are grandparents for permanent resident status in Canada, it is time to start thinking about an application if you want to make the 2014 cap. Contact Celso Boscariol at firstname.lastname@example.org to set up a consultation. I can help you determine if this program is right for you and help you to start the process of gathering documents. Considering the 5,000 cap, applications should be in early once processing starts.
